Books and examinations have been for the most part the crucial indicators that have delineated the Indian education system, but with the coming of the NCF in 2005 educators hoped to reform that opinion.
Till date, NCF 2005 has been translated into 22 languages and has affected the syllabi in 17 states. Several states have taken up this challenge and it is being effectuated with the active involvement of the State Councils for Educational Research and Training and District Institutes of Education and Training.
It is also imperative that the curriculum for teacher education is also redone to suit the new educational framework as also the shortage of teachers in the school and higher education sectors is addressed. The standards for various levels of teachers need to be set and maintained. This will provide the ground for the formulation of the courses of study.
The human resource development ministry realises the dearth of the requisite faculty and has come up with a National Mission on Teachers and Teaching that will put forward initiatives and changes to address topics such as dearth in faculty, policies related to recruitment, competence development of teachers for improving qualification, teaching aptitude, technology-enabled teaching, training and teacher absenteeism and allegiance.
Elements that together promote self and social awareness in conjunction with meeting academic requirements and providing practical skills are crucial to sustainable educational initiatives. Though it is important to obtain high scores in various examinations, Indian schools need to shift from the examination-centred course of imparting education and still produce quality students by following a more comprehensive approach.
