The SEZ policy has been controversial ever since it was announced in 2005. However, the government has now put a hold on the policy, waiting for the Relief and Rehabilitation policy to come in place first. Reason being, setting SEZs will require land acquisition by the government which will force thousands to be displaced from their homes, due to which a rehabilitation policy is primarily important. No further SEZ clearances will be given until the Empowered Group of Ministers reaches a decision. Some sections believe that widespread agitations might cause the ruling party to lose out heavily on votes in the upcoming elections, and hence the delay.
