Land acquisition is not a new trend that the Tata group specializes in

Land acquisition is not a new trend that the Tata group specializes in. Dozens of companies across India have been furiously acquiring land for ambitious expansion projects that mark the new energy being generated by India Inc. The moot question is: Why is the land being coveted by Ratan Tata becoming the subject of such violent controversies, police brutality and tragic deaths? Why are other leading industrialists like Mukesh Ambani, Sunil Mittal, Kumar Mangalam Birla and Pawan Munjal not embroiled in similar land related controversies?

If you do believe Ratan Tata’s sanctimonious act on television, it could be Jagdish Khattar (Maruti), Anand Mahindra or even H. S. Lheem (Hyundai), who could possibly have hatched a grand conspiracy and somehow persuaded firebrand politician Mamata Banerjee to derail the dream car project of Ratan Tata. Or was Tata referring to ‘other’ leading businessmen? Coming from a lesser entrepreneur, such allegations would have been dismissed as outlandish and even childish. Coming from Ratan Tata, the allegations reveal a strange and unexpected streak of petulance.
