"Military necessity”

The international pressure on government (there are roughly 75,000 human rights violation cases registered in various courts across the country) is evident in the fact that for past six years the annual human rights report card has not been forwarded to the United Nations. Such large number of cases only shows the dilemmas, which both the judiciary and the government face when it comes to striking a balance between “military necessity” and the need to protect human rights. Certainly, on one hand, the West expects all the countries to be tough against terrorism and on the other hand the West-based civil rights groups want the state to be more affirmative on human rights.

'Hold it', SEZ the government

The SEZ policy has been controversial ever since it was announced in 2005. However, the government has now put a hold on the policy, waiting for the Relief and Rehabilitation policy to come in place first. Reason being, setting SEZs will require land acquisition by the government which will force thousands to be displaced from their homes, due to which a rehabilitation policy is primarily important. No further SEZ clearances will be given until the Empowered Group of Ministers reaches a decision. Some sections believe that widespread agitations might cause the ruling party to lose out heavily on votes in the upcoming elections, and hence the delay.

With the Padmashree felicitation, Kidwai joins the most respected and elite group...

The tag of ‘first ever’ is not new to the CEO of Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation Limited (HSBC) and Global Director NestlĂ©, as Kidwai’s pioneering efforts began two decades back when she became the first ever Indian woman to earn a degree from the esteemed Harvard University. And since then, her outstanding persona has not looked back, dispassionately writing off the looming taboo about the corporate world being a male thing.

Land acquisition is not a new trend that the Tata group specializes in

Land acquisition is not a new trend that the Tata group specializes in. Dozens of companies across India have been furiously acquiring land for ambitious expansion projects that mark the new energy being generated by India Inc. The moot question is: Why is the land being coveted by Ratan Tata becoming the subject of such violent controversies, police brutality and tragic deaths? Why are other leading industrialists like Mukesh Ambani, Sunil Mittal, Kumar Mangalam Birla and Pawan Munjal not embroiled in similar land related controversies?

If you do believe Ratan Tata’s sanctimonious act on television, it could be Jagdish Khattar (Maruti), Anand Mahindra or even H. S. Lheem (Hyundai), who could possibly have hatched a grand conspiracy and somehow persuaded firebrand politician Mamata Banerjee to derail the dream car project of Ratan Tata. Or was Tata referring to ‘other’ leading businessmen? Coming from a lesser entrepreneur, such allegations would have been dismissed as outlandish and even childish. Coming from Ratan Tata, the allegations reveal a strange and unexpected streak of petulance.
