Fresh lessons for 21st century

Looking at the current scenario in education, we find that India continues to face stern challenges. Education for all is yet to happen even after nearly 66 years of independence.

Though school education is a multidimensional phenomenon, the availability of quality teachers, their regularity and their effectiveness in quality learning process is fundamental to core education. A concern, therefore, arises; do we have quality teachers engaged in schools? According to Union HRD minister Kapil Sibal, there is a shortage of 12 lakh teachers in government schools. The UNESCO Institute of Statistics 2010 report states that India will need 20 lakh new teachers by 2015.

Teaching as a career no longer seems to attract the younger generation. Mushrooming of private sector jobs with better pay packages is definitely the main reason.

Additionally, in Indian society it is not seen as a high-status profession. Mostly women opt for it due to their family circumstances. Lack of passion for teaching affects the learning outcome of students.

Education lays down the foundation for the future, nurtures the citizens of tomorrow. Here are a few things that need to be taken care of.
•Quality education ensuring gender equality needs to be taken care of, as opportunities, constraints and the impact of change affects both men and women.
•School curriculum for the K-12 segment needs to be updated to cater to the skills required for 21st century education.
•Teacher training courses need to be revitalised. Content improvement, technology-integrated delivery mechanism, assessments and monitoring of learning outcomes by the teachers should be part of the programme
•Digital divide emerging due to ICT in education needs to be bridged. Technology innovations should focus on catering to children in the lower socio-economic strata of society to keep pace with technological advances.
•Education for employ-ability has to be a priority.

From a revolutionary concept, e-learning has become the fastest growing trend in education in a span of 20 years. The idea to use technology and impart technology through the internet has been brought into practice in several parts of the world. In May 2007, children in Uruguay began to learn via laptops under the ‘one laptop per child’ scheme. The scheme was the brainchild of Nicholas Negroponte (founder of MIT’s Media Lab) and it was designed with the help of Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

In October 2009, in Nepal, where 70 per cent women and 35 per cent men in the country were illiterate, an educational initiative called ‘Room to Read’ paved way for the students to embrace technological learning and expand their horizons through Skype and Google.

Pavan Chauhan, Managing Director Meritnation.com, says online education has undergone changes for the good. “Until recently, online education amounted to a little more than electronic versions of the old-line correspondence courses. That has really changed with the arrival of web-based videos, instant messaging and collaboration tools such as interactive games and puzzles that can help a child grasp concept in a manner that is likely to make his understanding more permanent. The basic idea is to leverage technology to identify and understand each student’s specific learning needs and provide them customised content to nurture the learning curve.”

The virtual classrooms give you enough time to set your own study time from anywhere, where everything is delivered online. There is a vast room for students to communicate and interact with other students across the country and the world. Documents, transcripts, live discussions, training materials and even instructors are all available at convenient times. Managerial attitudes and it's implications

Professional versus personal life of Rajul:
Here, it is important to understand that Rajul is not a happy person and not satisfied with his job. He always thought that his job is monotonous with no creativity. Despite good earnings and high stature he had acquired over a period of time by impressing the top brass of the company, he was dissatisfied with his job. This dissatisfaction led to frustration, ultimately spoiling the environment at home. Rajul and his wife often quarelled on petty issues and he even scolded his two kids, one seven and other five.

Gradually, he started to think that his boring and monotonous work environment resulted in depression and anxiety for him, which created a bad environment at home.

Not only home, Rajul felt the pressure at office too. Being a senior employee, he was always answerable to the managing committee of the company. The managing committee of GT included Ms. Goldy (chairman), Mr. Gaurav (vice-chairman), and three other professionally independent qualified persons. To have proper administration, management and monitoring, the weekly meetings were held on a regular basis. The weekly meeting was chaired by Mr. Gaurav, while the minutes were prepared by Rajul. The meeting was attended by all three senior managers.

He recalls that a week ago, some incidents that occurred in the office had disturbed his sleep for a long time. The two issues happened one after the other and ultimately resulted in a major crisis.

When he was referring to the news relating to the Asian market tender opening advertisement in the local newspaper, Ms. Goldy approached him in bad mood. Ms. Goldy is considered a short-tempered person who has no control over the words she uses when angry. She demanded the annual financial report of the year that just ended. The annual report was supposed to be prepared by Mr. Ravi after consultation with Mr. Gaurav. Helping the seedling grow tall

After 30 years in sales, marketing and management, Mr. Jonar Nader now chairs management consulting firm Logictivity Pty Ltd. Mr. Nader’s previous role was as IBM’s e-business software manager and network computing manager. At IBM he was also the consumer manager for Asia Pacific South, responsible for ASEAN member states. He is the author of the best-selling Prentice Hall’s Illustrated Dictionary of Computing (Pearson) now in its third edition. He is also the technology writer for Butterworths’ Legal Dictionary, and the Student’s Legal Dictionary. Mr. Nadar was the co-founder of Australian Information Technology Society.

Q. You started your journey from scratch and faced many hardships. Please share some of your experiences, and how you paved your success route.
A. Both my childhood and teenage years were unpleasant and unhappy. Yet, hardships showed me the reality of life, as most people endure it. It gave me an urgent reason to secure my independence of mind. It helped me become a better friend to people who suffer similarly, even as adults. This experience helped me soften my stance about human frailty, making people feel safe in my presence. I have a feeling that many successful people simply have no idea (or have forgotten) what it must be like for the less fortunate. A lack of empathy dulls any achievement. My colleagues are loyal to me because they know I share all the accolades with them. I pay my staff so much that many of them argue with me and some sneak the money back into the bank account because they feel they are earning too much. Many return the cheque and refuse to cash it. They also feel amply rewarded in many other ways.

Q. Who has been your inspiration?
A. People find joy in heart-warming stories of triumph over tragedy. I am not sure that adulation, hope or joy are the ingredients for inspiration. I am inspired by negativity and driven by stupidity. I am powered by disgraceful behaviour. When I see bad things, I think hard. When I see unfairness, I plan better.
